Serekunda Central has justified the reason for their inclusion in this year’s Super Nawettan despite being the only Gambia Football Federation recognised Nawettan zone that failed to organise a competition this season.
They were included in Group A of this year’s championship draw held on Tuesday. The other teams in the group are defending champions Serrekunda West, Lamin, Brikama, BEM and Manjai.
Lamin Dibba, secretary general of the Serrekunda Central Sports Committee lamented that his zone is helpless inspite the efforts by the Committee to stage the Nawettan. He explained further that the committee had played its super cup, which was graced by members of the GFF.
Dibba claimed that most of the teams and players that participate in the Serrekunda Central Nawettan takes the Zone as a secondary choice.
“Most of the teams will go and play qualifying round football in other zones and after their elimination, that is the time they come to our zone for Nawettan football. The other reason for the delay of most of our finals is because we don’t have support to develop our football pitch,” he affirmed.
Alagie Nyassi, Grassroots Football Development Coordinator at the GFF said to derecognise a zone is not determined by the Super Nawettan Organising Committee (SOC) but by the Regional Sports Committee, in this case the Kanifing Municipality and the GFF. He added that the Super Nawettan Organising Committee is given the mandate to organise and steer the affairs of the Super Nawettan but is not their mandated to regularise any zone.
