The President of Athletics Region II, Momar Mbye, has hailed the wonderful performances displayed by athletes at the just concluded two-day Ecowas Junior Athletics Championship in Banjul.

While speaking in an interview with Observer Sport, he said the athletes drawn from eight countries in the sub-region demonstrated great talents.

Gambia football fans have reacted positively to the wonderful performance shown by the country’s U-20 team in eliminating Sierra Leone and Morocco to advance to the third and final round of the 2017 African Youth Championship qualifiers.

OMAR SISSE 1

Yusupha Saidykhan, a keen football fan from Bundung said the Young Scorpions have played extremely well, noting that they could have beaten the Moroccans in the game, but the referee was cheating on them deliberately.

“The U-20 players played collectively and played with their heart together. Togetherness is one of the most important things for a team’s success,” he told Observer Sport while further advising the players to maintain the spirit and approach.

Modou Lamin Beyai, a sports journalist, said the Gambia’s U-20 qualifying to the next round of CAF U-20 qualifiers is good news in the ears. “Omar Sise’s boys did the nation proud by going away from home, compose themselves and get a win, something that our National Team has struggled to do in recent years. I wish them all the best of luck in the final qualifying game.”

Another fan called Gabriel Ceesay praised the team’s performances in the ongoing qualifiers. “The Gambian players have done a very good work for the country with their performances, and most important of all is that they all played with their hearts,” he told this medium.

“I wish them to continue doing wonderful things for the nation, and prayed that we all achieve our target in making it to the tournament proper in Zambia.”

Saffie Singhateh of Sanchaba was also a happy fan as she heap praise on the lads for the deserving win. “The Gambia is always good in the junior level but when it comes to the senior level we always struggle to book for places in any tournament.”

Abdoulie Bah, Gambian sports journalist based in the United States posted on Facebook, “Senior team are you watching? They [U-20] don’t play for the local or foreign coach, they don’t play for a GFF President, neither for public rating nor money – they play for the national shirt and flag. Ultimately, that’s what it’s gonna take a developing country like ours to make it to a major senior tournament. Congrats Gambia U20 . Togo did it with bigger problems; Cape Verde Islands are doing it with one grass pitch and now Guinea Bissau.”

Tapha Manneh, head coach of Gamtel FC said that he was impressed with both the home and away games. “Eliminating a North African team is another impressive thing. The U-20 technicians need to do more work after the performances especially in the areas of attacking, they also need to give more motivation to the young players who are making the country proud.”

The Gambia’s Ambassador to the Kingdom of Morocco has tasked the country’s U-20 team to keep up the good work and never relent in their attempt to make Gambians proud.

Kebba S. Touray was speaking in a post-match interview with Observer Sport at the Fus de Rabat Stadium on Sunday where he watched with his entire family as the Young Scorpions knocked Young Atlas Lions out of the African Youth Championship qualifier following a 7-6 post-match penalty shootout win.

“What I have seen today is very encouraging. With this spirit, cohesion and cooperation, am sure they are going to beat Guinea in the next round of the qualifiers,” Ambassador Touray said.

“I’m very happy and proud today and I am convinced that these boys will make it to the finals. They need to be encouraged and keep together and they can go a very long way.”

A very nervous Ambassador Touray watched from the VIP box of the Stadium the dramatic post-match shootout and had to hold his breath on several occasions before The Gambia eventually prevailed 7-6.

He punched the air in celebration when Real de Banjul defender Mbye Faye converted the winning spot kick before going down to congratulate the players on their way out off the pitch.

“Indeed I was very nervous because there goal was not even a goal; it was a very clear off sight and we had a penalty which wasn’t awarded but I’m very proud with the way they handled the penalties,” he added.

The Young Scorpions would host Guinea Conakry on Sunday July 10 in the first leg of the third and final round qualifier with the return match to be held in Conakry in the weekend of the 22nd to 24th July.

The winner over the two legs would qualify to the group stages of the 2017 edition of the African Youth Championship to be held in Zambia. Guinea defeated Ivory Coast on the away goals rule in the last round.

Gambia Captain Omar Colley has been linked with a summer move away from Djurgarden with Spanish La Liga side Espanyol and Germay’s Hertha Berlin rumored to be his next destination.

Djurgarden Sporting Director Bosse Andersson has already admitted that few clubs had made enquires about the availability of the Gambian defender and even though he stop short of disclosing their identities, Colley’s defensive partner for the past one and half year appeared to have confirmed his departure.

Speaking in an interview with Swedish publication FotbollDirekt, Tim Björkström urged club officials to strengthen the defensive third should in case the former Wallidan prodigy departs the Tele2 Arena.

“Maybe we should look for a solution, then, find the right player to replace him so that we can have three good central defenders,” he told FotbollDirekt.se.

Following a strong start to the season, Djurgaden have conceded 17 goals in the last nine games alone but Colley’s position has never been in doubt and, therefore, his departure would be a huge loss to the team.

“It is clear that he is a good player. He is very powerful and has a good attitude. He contributes a lot and it would be sad if he leaves. Meanwhile, Jake (Jacob Une Larsson) would also get the chance to play a little bit and I’m sure he can do it damn good,” Björkström added.

Gambia U-20 Hero: We are Now Focused on Guinea

Gambia hero, Mbye Faye, has stated that the Young Scorpions have already put behind them Sunday’s post-match penalty shootout defeat of Morocco by redirecting its focus and energy towards next month’s final round qualifier with Guinea Conakry.

The Real de Banjul defender scored the winning penalty as The Gambia U-20 saw off the challenge from Morocco in Rabat to book a date in the third and final round of the 2017 African Youth Championship qualifiers. The first leg would be played in Banjul on July 9 with the decider in Conakry two weeks later.

“We want to return thanks to God and our parents as well as the coaching staff who did a fantastic job. I wasn’t ready to take that kick but when they lose I just took the ball and then went ahead and scored but I always knew we were going to qualify,” he told Observer Sports in an interview.

“But right now this game has passed and now our energy is redirected towards Guinea in the next round which is the most important thing. We cannot thank the coaching staff enough though because they have worked really hard for this.”

Mbye has formed a formidable partnership at defense with Lamin Sonko and the 1-0 loss in Rabat was the only goal they’ve conceded in six international games, stretching back to the WAFU U-20 Championship in Senegal late last year.

Mbye hailed the achievement as very significant but was again quick to thank the coaching staff for doing a fantastic job. He also expressed hope that they wouldn’t let in another goal as they seek to secure qualification.

“The referee was [also] against us but we were prepared for it that was why we refused to fall for their tricks. It was as if we were playing against 14 men because the referee and his two assistants were also against us,” Mbye added.

“They also watered the field to the point that it became waterlogged and our legs became very heavy.”

Pa Omar Babou scored the first kick for The Gambia and even though he was ordered by the Libyan referee to retake his spot kick, he held his composure to convert that as well to set his team on its way to the 7-6 win.

After the game, a dumbfounded Babou was at a loss for words when asked by Observer Sports to explain the circumstances surrounding the controversy. “I don’t so only the referee can explain what happened,” were his response.

“But I wasn’t nervous because when you go to my parent club [Banjul United] I’m the number one [set piece] specialist there and I have confidence in myself. I know that even after 10 consecutive penalties from me that goalkeeper was never going to save one.”

Pa Omar also described as an obvious off sight the goal scored by the Moroccans but thanked God for giving a positive outcome to The Gambia. He remained optimistic that the U-20 would qualify for both Zambia and the World Cup in Korea.

Cleveland Is Believeland

$
0
0
THERE is no song called “I Left My Heart in Cleveland.” Cleveland is the flip side of California and the Golden State Warriors, whom they have met in the last two N.B.A. finals. The former Cleveland Cavaliers basketball coach David Blatt once said: “We’re in Cleveland. Nothing is easy here.” Then he got fired.

Sunday night Cleveland came back from a three-games-to-one deficit to beat Golden State and win the N.B.A. championship. I was born in Cleveland, my father was born in Cleveland, my children were born in Cleveland, and we’ve all seen many, many losing teams — 52 years’ worth, if you’re counting. And we’re counting here in Cleveland. The last time Cleveland won a championship was the 1964 National Football League Championship. My dad took me. I was in Section 18, Row T, Seat 8 of Municipal Stadium.

Two years ago, when LeBron James announced his return to Cleveland from Miami in Sports Illustrated, some Cleveland men teared up. My middle-aged friend Jimmy and I did. So un-Cleveland — those tears. The credo here is “Cleveland: You’ve Got to Be Tough,” from a T-shirt first printed in the 1970s when the boy-mayor Dennis Kucinich ushered the city into default.

James wrote: “Before anyone ever cared where I would play basketball, I was a kid from Northeast Ohio. It’s where I walked. It’s where I ran. It’s where I cried. It’s where I bled. It holds a special place in my heart. People there have seen me grow up. I sometimes feel like I’m their son.”

My kids moved away from Cleveland. Maybe, like King James, they will come back. I have one son temporarily sleeping here. There’s hope. It’s sometimes hard to find jobs here, it’s not particularly trendy here, it’s frequently gray, but there are some major pluses: no traffic jams, cheap houses, a great art museum and orchestra and coconut bars (a local Jewish delicacy).

In 2012, two years after James left Cleveland for South Beach, I played a gig (I have a klezmer band) at a relative’s bat mitzvah in Atlanta. I played music for the hora for a few minutes until the D.J. cued up a sappy recording of “Hava Nagila” that drowned me out. He said, “Give it up for Uncle Bert from Cleveland!”

A guest complimented me on my clarinet playing, and said he was from Cleveland, too. “People are always ragging on Cleveland,” he said. “I defend it. Everybody lives in developments here in Atlanta, and if you’re here two years, you’re considered an old-timer.”

I told him to buy the book “The Whore of Akron” by Scott Raab, about James leaving town. I said: “It’s more about the author, who lives in New Jersey. He’s from Cleveland and all he can think about, still, is Cleveland.”

When I got home from Atlanta, I decided to buy the book and ship it to the guest, via Amazon, as a gift, with a note: “From ‘Uncle Bert’ in Cleveland.”

I didn’t even get a thank you. A Midwesterner would write a thank you, I figured. I thought about writing, “You’re a disgrace to Cleveland!” Instead, I messaged, “You get the LeBron book I sent you?”

He messaged right back: “I had no idea you were the one that sent me the book! I remember you as Julie’s Uncle Bert and the note with the book said it was from Al.” (My legal name is Albert, and apparently the small-print “From Uncle Bert” note was overshadowed by my name and address.) He continued: “Once I picked up the book, I could not put it down. It was as if Raab was reading my mind and soul. He translates perfectly what it means to be both Jewish and a Cleveland sports fan. I actually highlighted portions of the book that I will go back and read during the next heartbreak to help me get through.”

No need to re-read, Cleveland fans. I’ve got to tell my father the news. The problem is he has been dead for 30 years. The newest T-shirt in town is “Believeland, Ohio.” I’ll try that on. Hi, Dad! Today, you don’t have to be tough in Cleveland.

The U-20 Scorpions’ Coach has said that the international friendly against Senegal is going to be a good test game.

Omar Sise has been speaking ahead of the team’s departure, tomorrow (Thursday) to Dakar where they will play friendly game against their counterparts next Sunday.

Both Gambia and Senegal are into the final and decisive round of qualifiers with Gambia taking on a French-speaking country (Guinea Conakry) and Senegal taking on an English-speaking country (Ghana).

“We will keep pushing because we know that it is not going to be easy but we pray to God to guide us to qualify,” he said in an interview with Observer Sports yesterday evening at the Independence Stadium where the team held its normal training session.

The friendly game against Senegal on the 29th of this month, he said, is part of the technical preparation ahead of the encounter with Guinea Conakry. “So we are hopeful that we can have a good game there [Dakar]. The test game [with Senegal] is very good.”

Since the start of the qualifying campaign, the U-20 had played all its test matches against local-based teams. The team will play another test match with Real De Banjul today (Wednesday) evening at 4pm at the Stadium.

He added: “We have always wanted to play international friendlies but because of time factor and some circumstances it could not happened. This game is proposed by the Senegalese FA because they [Senegal] are playing Ghana in the final round.”

The Gambia will play against Guinea in the final and decisive round with the first leg scheduled in Banjul on the 10th July and the return leg two weeks later.

“I will love to see the stadium full to its capacity in our game against Guinea because we are going to do everything to win at home. I know the game against Guinea is not going to be easy because they have players that have been together for the last two years,” he further told this paper.

Pa Suwareh Faye, the U-20 team manager spoke to Observer Sports. He lauded the spirit among the players and calls on the general public to support them in their efforts to qualify to the championship proper.

I also follow the type of food they eat, which I advised them [the food to eat] when we are not in camp.”
