The Gambia Volleyball Federation (GVBF) has dedicated this year’s volleyball curtain raiser (Super Cup final) to the Hon. Minister of Interior, Ousman Sonko.

The game would be played on Saturday at the Manneh Sillah Memorial Lawn in Banjul.

The double male and female finals would be played between the record seven-time champions Gambia Armed Forces women team and last year’s surprise finalists Gamtel/Gamcel. In the men’s category, GAF would entertain four-time champions Old Jeshwang. The first final will kick off at 3pm followed by the second game.

Reacting to the news, Minister Sonko reaffirmed his commitment to work with The Gambia Volleyball Federation (GBVF) in ensuring that the sport is developed in the country.

He added that the success the GVBF has registered in the past two years was unprecedented, noting that the committee under the leadership of Yunusa Barry has greatly moved volleyball to another level in The Gambia.

”I am part and parcel of the volleyball committee and I will continue to join hands in the development of the sport in The Gambia,” Minister Sonko added.

“The Gambia has so far earned international recognition and we shouldn’t let this glory slip from us,” acting President Bai Doudou Jallow said. “We are expecting a very competitive league this season so we are appealing to all the teams to be committed and to ensure discipline at all cost,” he added.

Unprecedented: More Gambian Athletes at Rio Olympics

As Gambians celebrate the 22nd Anniversary of the July 22nd Revolution, stakeholders in the sporting domain are reveling in what can be described as a historic year (2016). The Gambia, for the first time, has more than one qualified athlete for this summer’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

For a country where football remains the dominant sport even though it provides little or nothing to celebrate about in recent years, such a feat is worth celebrating. The development also underlines the need for other sporting disciplines to be given every attention by those responsible for promoting these games.

In the 2012 London Olympics, The Gambia was represented by Suwaibou Sanneh, who missed out on qualification for the Rio Games. This time around, the country will be represented at the Rio by sprinters Adama Jammeh and Miss Gina Bass as well as Finland-based Gambian judoka Fye Alex Njie and swimmer Modou Jonga.

Adama Jammeh, arguably the country’s finest male sprinter, secured his place at the Games by winning silver and finishing within the qualification time at the finals of the African Athletics Championship in Durban, South Africa. Gina Bass on the other hand, booked herself a ticket to Rio whilst in France. Both athletes represented The Gambia in the 200 meters.

Adama Jammeh is now the second Gambian male to secure direct qualification to an Olympics in the sprint event, following in the footsteps of Sanneh in London. Jammeh did not just qualify to the Games but has also smashed another national record (20:45).Gina, who won qualification to the Games finished third in the 200meters women’s event in France. Swimmer Modou Jonga will also be representing the country on wild card status in Rio.

Adama and Gina are currently in Italy getting better prepared with their training partners. Meanwhile,   at the IAAF High Performance Training Centre in Dakar are those athletes who have earned qualification as wildcards.

These qualifications are a culmination of more than two decades of passionate support and commitment to the development of sports in the country. The Government has installed an internationally recognised  standard athletics track at the Independence Stadium and the hope is that  many more athletes will emerge from this new track to represent the county in future competitions.

Bai Sering Colley, a sports enthusiast added, “For the Gambia to produce three athletes for the Rio Olympics is a big achievement for our sports.”

Jarai Jawneh, Regional Sports Chairperson, Upper River Region, summed up the achievement of the country’s Brazil bound athletes as historic and worth celebrating. “I wish the athletes all the best and prayed that they return home with medals.”

Having over five athletes representing the country at this year’s Olympics according to Muhammed Lamin Ceesay of Lamin Village is a very good development, saying it is high time that The Gambia show the rest of the world that despite being a small nation, we do have something to offer in athletics.

Alagie Jobarteh of Sukuta expressed delight with the country’s Olympians, whom he said are primed to fly the country’s flag in Rio de Janiero, Brazil. He added that this is worth jubilating for having almost over three athletes qualifying for the Olympics without a wild card.

Young Scorpions Take on Guinea Tomorrow

The Gambia U-20 Team will take on their equivalents from Guinea Conakry tomorrow in the third and final round of the African Youth Championship qualifiers with a place in Zambia 2017 at stake.
Omar Sise’s charges drew the first  leg in Banjul a fortnight ago and, therefore, both sides will head into Sunday evening’s game in Conakry with the tie evenly poised in the balance.

The Gambia, seeking a third appearance at the continental showpiece event, after qualifications in 2007 and 2011, will rely mainly on the influence of star player and Captain Ablie Jallow.

The Generation Foot midfielder, on loan from Real de Banjul, has been unarguably the best Gambian player throughout the four-month qualifying campaign and his deft touch, surging runs and killer passes are already attracting interest from clubs outside the continent, mainly in Belgium.

Despite being the most important player in the team, there are others who’ve had a huge say in The Gambia’s wins over Sierra Leone and Morocco in the previous stages of the qualifiers. One such player is Bun Sanneh, Jallow’s teammate at both Generation Foot and Real de Banjul.

Bun has equally been a key player for the team and his playmaking skills were dearly missed in the goalless stalemate with Guinea as a result of  his rare bad day in office. If the Brikama native can have a good game tomorrow, Gambia is within a great chance of securing a place in the biennial for the first time in six years.

With two goals in the qualifiers, Pa Omar Jobe is The Gambia’s leading scorer in the competition and is one of the players with the ability to unlock a resolute Guinea side. A product of Nawettan football, the battling striker has the ability to unlock any defense on his day and his contribution in helping his side defending in difficult circumstances has also made him a darling of gambling??? and supporters.

With Radio Gambia’s Essa Sowe already on the ground in Conakry, the state broadcaster will air live commentaries of this crucial game on 106.7 and 98.6 on fm.
Kickoff is 4pm Gambian time.

AYC Zambia 2017: Gambia Robbed in Conakry

The Gambia yesterday missed out on a place in the African Youth Championship following a 2-1 defeat to Guinea in Conakry with the home side advancing to Zambia 2017 on that same aggregate score.

The two sides played a goalless stalemate in Banjul a fortnight ago, leaving the tie evenly poised in the balance. When Dauoda Camara put Guinea ahead after just 16 minutes, a situation that was always going to be a hostile and difficult environment for the Young Scorpions, became even harder but they refused to budge and soon produced a goal of their own as striker Pa Omar Jobe looked to have equalised for The Gambia but the goal was ruled out by the referee from Benin in what GRTS commentator Essa Sowe called “reasons best known to the official.”

“I have never wept in football until today and for me there is no reason to go the extreme by saying something that isn’t true or sully my reputation but The Gambia was robbed there is no doubt about that,” Sowe told the Daily Observer after the game.

“The first disallowed goal for The Gambia is something that I cannot explain because there was a back pass by the Guinean defender and Pa Omar picked it to score and in football rules, that was a legitimate goal. The second disallowed goal as well, the referee gave a goal which was scored on the counter attack but after few seconds the assistant flagged for something I don’t know and the referee changed his decision afterwards.”

The Gambia again thought they had finally secured the much needed away goal in the second half, that would’ve seen them through to Zambia, but again the Francophone referee disallowed the goal to further infuriate the Gambian team and the match commentator on the state broadcaster. Almost immediately, Guinea increased the tally to 2-0, making the task look insurmountable for Omar Sise’s charges.

Gambia was handed a lifeline in the closing stages when it was awarded a penalty. Pa Omar Jobe stepped forward and converted the resulting kick but the referee again ordered for a retake and it was after a second successful penalty kick that the goal was allowed to stand. The hosts endured a nervy final minute but the Gambians couldn’t muster an equaliser and as a result, it is the Guineans that would be participating in Zambia next year, leaving Gambians to rue the perceived shambolic officiating of the Benin referee.

After the game, Gambians took to social media to vent their frustrations based on the ball-to-ball commentary offered by Sowe. Veteran journalist Tijan Masaneh Ceesay was the first to express his views to sum up the game, reliving his days as a football commentator.

“Here at the September 28th Stadium in Conakry, our motherland has been robbed of a well deserved victory. The kids are heartbroken, but yes, they can take solace in the fact that they represented the stripes with every ounce of Gambian sweat and for that they should be proud. A heroic welcome will await them at the Banjul International Airport,” he posted on Facebook.

Another Facebook user, Adi Mastermind Jarjou wrote: “Our football governing body, GFF, [The Gambia Football Federation] should do something now, enough is enough. Last December it happened in Senegal [in the WAFU Cup], Morocco and now Guinea. How long are we going to be victims of bad refereeing?”

Siez Jojo Tarrus Jammeh added: “Is all over in Guinea; The Gambia U-20’s hope of making it to AFCON U-20 to be held in Zambia have come to a dramatic end after losing 2 goals to 1 to Guinea Conakry in an unbelievable fashion. The Darling Scorpions suffered two bad officiating decisions after two clear goals were ruled out by the Benin referee according to Essa Sowe of state radio, who was commenting live from Conakry. Kudos to Head Coach Omar Sise and the boys; it is a shame that it has to end this way. Is football and this is not the end of everything but I think CAF should really have a reality check on some of their referees. We are out but I’m sure our heads are high: # CongratsU20.”

Muhammed Lamin Saidykhan, a reporter with West Coast Radio, also tried to make an analysis of the game and what the future holds for Gambian football.

“Today I stand to be right as we walk the streets of Conakry so proud in the sense that we had gone through hurdles and had gone this far to the last minute. Losing honourably to a country in Guinea, I salute Coach Omar Sise for the efforts and the boys for the sacrifice,” he wrote.

U-20 Coach Blames Referee’s Bad Officiating for Gambia’s Exit

The head coach of The Gambia’s U-20 side, Omar Sise, has expressed disappointment at what he called “bad officiating” by the Benin referee following his side’s elimination from the qualifiers of the African Youth Championship in Zambia next year.

The Young Scorpions suffered a 2-1 away loss to Guinea in the second leg of the final and decisive round of the qualifiers on Sunday in Conakry.

The Gambian side traveled to Conakry after a goalless stalemate two weeks ago at the Independence Stadium in Bakau.

Confident of victory in Conakry, the Young Scorpions gave a respectable performance, creating chances, but it was the home side that grabbed the spot to Zambia.

Two goals by striker Pa Omar Jobe were ruled out by the referee from Benin, whose officiating was nothing close to “fairness”.

The lads and Coach Omar Sise deserve commendation for coming this far in the qualifiers, but as many believe the referee did not help the situation.

In a post-match interview with GRTS’s Essa Sowe in Conakry, Sise apologised to Gambians for failing to meet the target. He was however very proud of his players, describing them as “fighters”.

He was however really disappointed at the officiating of the referee. “I cannot believe that the referee can be rejecting our goals unnecessarily; it is disappointing that African football can go this way. For my boys, this is not the end because they are young, determined and ready to play. I will like to thank all The Gambians who have been praying for us and cheering us.”

He finally called on Gambians to keep supporting the team, saying they have potentials to make the country proud in the next few years.

Last year’s league winners Dunnes FC are the champions of the Gunjur Super Cup following a 3-1 win over last year’s knockout winners Persamai in the traditional curtain raiser at the Gunjur Nyamina football field over the weekend.

Despite the downpour, the turnout was impressive.

Both sides got to a good start in the first half with few chances to report on as they were solid at the back.

Just four minutes into the second half, Dunnes FC’s Abdoulie Jallow broke the deadlock when he converted a brilliant strike to give the league champions the lead.

Few minutes later, star player Tijan Barrow crafted in a superb free kick on the hour mark minute to restore parity for his side, before he added a second to seal a convincing victory for his side.

Sulayman Jawo scored the consolation for the hopeless Persamai.

The President of Gunjur Sports Committee, Lamin S Darboe, was quite happy that Green Vision International came on board to sponsor the Super Cup.

As winners, Dunnes FC went home with a giant trophy and cash prize of D9, 000, while Persamai received a consolation  prize of D6, 000.

The game that was played at the community’s mini-stadium, attracted an estimated crowd of 10, 000 spectators.

Blue Stars FC have been prolific trophy winners since joining the Serekunda East Nawettan four years ago.

The two teams played an expansive football full of attacking play but neither side could capitalise on the numerous opportunities to score, forcing the game to be settled in the penalty kicks.

Blue Stars FC as winners went home with a trophy and D10, 000, while Medina pocketed home a consolation prize of D5, 000.

Speaking in a post-match interview with Observer Sports, Yunusa Badjie, the Blue Stars Coach expressed satisfaction for winning the curtain raiser, bragging that no team beats him twice in a competition.

“I am very happy to win the Super Cup. I know the benefit of winning the Cup because I am managing a second division team,” he said, adding that winning the trophy serves as a motivation for the upcoming season.

“I am taking this defeat in a good faith. We will go back to our training ground and work more on our problems.”

He finally congratulated Blue Stars FC on winning the curtain raiser.

Alagie Nyassi, the first Vice President of the Serrekunda East Sports Development Assocaition (SESDO) also expressed delight at concluding the final, adding that everything is now set for the new season.

Gambian international Momodou Ceesay has returned to Slovak side MSK Zilina on a short-term contract following a one-week trial.

Ceesay, 27, without a club in the last six months after leaving Maccabi Netanya played for Zilina between 2010 and 2012 and was the catalyst of the club’s qualification to the group stages of the UEFA Champions League scoring in all six games during the qualifiers.

Speaking in an interview with the club’s official website this week, the former Wallidan, Westerlo and Kairat Almaty forward said: “I’m back home. My agent told me that Zilina wanted to test me to see whether I’m in the [best] physical condition to play and help the team. That is why I’m here. [But] for me it is not a test; for me, am back.”

Speaking on his memories from his first stint at the club, he added: “Everything is new here, but the feelings are the same. I feel happy here as always. It’s good, every workout, I feel more confident and better. After a medical test I have no problem.

GFF Frowns at Poor Refereeing

The President of the Gambia Football Federation Lamin Kabba Bajo has congratulated the Young Scorpions on their spirited fight in their weekend match against Guinea.

The Gambian side missed a place in the under-20 African youth championship to be held in Zambia next year, after suffering a 2-1 defeat to their Guinean counterparts in Conakry over the weekend.

The President earlier on sent a message of felicitation to the team but however blamed Gambia’s exit on bad officiating.

Below is the full text of his statement.

It was with great disappointment and dismay that I follow the commentary of the match played in Conakry which by all indications was marred with poor refereeing.

Despite the questionable decisions of the match officials, the boys continued to play with sustained vigour and determination to reach finals of the continent’s U20 flagship tournament in Zambia, but their hopes were dash due to mediocre and substandard refereeing.

Though the result at the final whistle saw the end of the road for the baby scorpions to Zambia, I am joined by my colleagues in the Federation, the government and all Gambians to salute the outstanding performance and resilience of the boys by fighting vigorously to the end and by assuring them of our continuous and unqualified support for now and the future.

Finally I thank the GRTS management for availing the football loving masses the rare opportunity of following the match in a live commentary on the radio. Their initiative is saluted and deeply appreciated. And for the general football family, I say thank you very much for the consistent support, well wishes and prayers. I share your disappointment and shock, but the future is promising.

I am eternally grateful to the players, their families, clubs and all those associated with the footballers for their love, trust, confidence and inspiration.

For the head coach and his technical team, you have done extremely well both on and off the pitch by putting up a good selection and producing respectable results before and throughout the qualifiers. You have our fullest support now and the future.
