Gambia Ports Authority (GPA) stretched its unbeaten start to the season to ten games following a 2-1 defeat of Samger at the Serrekunda East Mini-Stadium on Sunday.

Gregory Sambou and Essa Colley scored in the 10th and 29th minutes respectively to give GPA a commanding 2-0 lead and Mamudo Ngum’s 89th minute consolation was not enough to save Samger from a second straight defeat.

With six wins and four draws going into the final game of the first round, Alhagie Sarr’s charges are on 22 points, four ahead of their nearest challengers Brikama United who had defeated Banjul United on Saturday.

Speaking in a post-match interview shortly after the game, Sarr described the win over the Academy Boys as their best performance of the season yet.

“Playing 45 minutes and scoring two goals is very important for us compared to our previous games where we would score one goal or nothing in the first half,” he affirmed, adding that this level of consistency could lead them to their first league title in six years.

GPA will next play Real de Banjul in the final game of the first round before the league takes a break and looking ahead to that match, Sarr warned his players against complacency, urging them to work hard for the three points.

For his part, Omar Jobe the Samger assistant coach expressed his disappointment with the result. He acknowledged that his team played very well but the unavailability of some key players contributed to the loss.
