The President of Athletics Region II, Momar Mbye, has hailed the wonderful performances displayed by athletes at the just concluded two-day Ecowas Junior Athletics Championship in Banjul.

While speaking in an interview with Observer Sport, he said the athletes drawn from eight countries in the sub-region demonstrated great talents.

According to him, it was important to organise such an event in bringing about the needed integration within the sub-region of Ecowas. The championship, he added helps to create competition among athletes of the sub-region.

With the next championship scheduled to take place in Sierra Leone, Mbye said the organisers will come up with measures to deter countries from using over-age athletes for the junior championship.

Dodou Capi Joof, President of The Gambia Athletics Association said: “I feel that it is now necessary for us to organise this championship so that people will see the talents that the country is having.”

With the readily available tracks at the Stadium in Bakau, Joof is looking forward to more international athletic championships to be hosted by the country.
