Samkum Takes on Anfield Tomorrow in Late M O Faal Super Cup Final

All roads lead to the Serrekunda West Mini-Stadium tomorrow (Friday) where 2015 league winners Samkum of Bijilo FC and last year’s knockout winners Anfield FC of Kanifing will battle it out for the late Alkalo Muhammed Omar Faal Super Cup final.

In what promises to be a mouth-watering final, the Serrekunda West Sports Development Organisation (SWESDO) said it is looking forward to a successful final.

Bai Ndongo Drammeh, Public Relations Officer of the Committee said the idea to name the trophy after the late Latrikunda German Alkalo, is meant to remember him for all that he has done for humanity.

Drammeh, therefore, called on players, fans and coaches to maintain peaceful conduct before, during and after the final, stressing that the rules and regulation will not to be comprised.

According to him, he is looking forward to a record turnout when the two champions meet tomorrow.

Reacting to the news, Pa Omar Faal, the eldest son of the late Alkalo thanked the SK West Sports Committee for naming the Super Cup after his late father. He described his late dad as a great man who has done a lot for humanity.

About Late M O Faal

Born in Latrikunda, on the 28th November 1928, Alhaji M O Faal received his formal education in The Gambia before he pursued a Diploma Programme in Book-Keeping and Accountancy at the London School of Accountancy. Upon the successful completion of his course,  he worked briefly as a §Shop Clerk at LCA (BARTHES). Thereafter, he joined the firm of Maurel Freres S A as trainee Commercial Manager and by virtue of his impressive performance; he was elevated to the position of Senior Store Keeper with responsibility for wholesale and supplies. He also served as a Civil Servant and retired honourably in 1983 as Storekeeper at the Ministry of Agriculture.

Between 1956 and 1972, Alhaji MO Faal served as councilor for the Latrikunda Community and also became Deputy Chairman Kombo Rural Authority and Kanifing Urban District Council, respectively. In his capacity as Deputy Chairman Kombo Rural Authority, he was honoured to have received Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth II  during her visit to The Gambia in 1961.

Alhaji M O Faal was secretary to the Latrikunda Central Mosque Committee for many years and he was the Secretary General of The Gambia Islamic Solidarity Association and founder of Omar Bun Hatab Islamic School in Latrikunda.

Between 1991 to 2015,  Alhaji M O Faal was the Alkalo of Latrikunda and he was the seventh member of the Faal family in the line of succession to the Alkaloship of Latrikunda.

In recognition of his selfless service to the community, the MRG award was conferred on him in October, 2000. He died on 5th February, 2015.
