22nd July Marathon Moved to August 6th

T22nd July marathon competition, which was earlier slated for next Saturday, has been moved to the 6th August in a bid to ensure a much more successful competition.

The race is part of activities marking the 22nd anniversary since the advent of the glorious 22nd July Revolution.

At a press conference held on Wednesday at the GAF Training Centre in Fajara, the organising committee said preparations were in high gear to ensure a successful marathon.

The registration, according to the committee, is opened to all and is free.

Describing the upcoming marathon as historic, Mahmoud Jawla, deputy executive director of the National Sports Council and a member of the organising committee said handsome prizes would be given to the winners.

The committee chaired by General Yankuba Drammeh, Deputy CDS of The Gambia Armed Forces, Jawla added, is working very hard to ensure all logistic arrangements are put in place.

“The race for the 42km for both male and female is starting from Kuloro; 21km both male and female starting from Lamin Galp Patrol Station, and 10km race for both male and female starting from Iceman Junction. The 22nd July Square in Banjul is the final destination,” he added.

He urged interested individuals to collect a registration form from The Gambia Athletics Association at the Stadium. “All races will starts at 9am sharp towards Banjul.”

Novelty Run

Jawla went on to reveal that there will also be a run for Cabinet Ministers, Service Chiefs, Managing Directors, Governors and Mayors, Chiefs, Alkalos, Chief Justice and the Judiciary. This event, he said will take place on the 7th August starting from the Arch 22 to the 22nd July Square.

Colonel Yahya Drammeh, Public Relations Officer of GAF, and Alhaji Abdoulie Bojang of the National Sports Council, both members of the organising committee said they are looking forward to a memorable race.
