An impressive and energetic Brikama United side on Sunday defeated the golden jubilee boys, Read de Banjul in their opening game of the 2016-17 GFF division one league season at the Boxba Mini-Stadium in Brikama.
Real had a good start with determination in the opening minutes and their dominant bared fruits when defender Salifu Krubally nodded in a superb header after Pa Modou Sohna delightfully played the ball on his head after just 10 minutes.
The Sateba Boys pushed hard for an equaliser but they couldn’t unlock the cohesive partnership of defenders Salifu Krubally and Mbaye Faye at the back, thus the first half ended in favour of Real de Banjul.
In the second half, Sulayman Kuyateh injected fresh legs to add flavour and tenacity up front by bringing on Sainey Bojang and Yahya Aihmane. The changes put light in the game when Sulayman Saho (BIG) crafted in a thunderous long range effort only for goalie Alagie Nyabally to punch it out to the path of Daniel Mendy who scored his first goal for Brikama United after four years to ensure parity.
The home side continued to put pressure on the visitors and in the 70th minute, Abdoulie Gomez tapped home to give Brikama United the lead. It ended Brikama 2 and Real de Banjul 1.
Abdoulie Njie, one of the technicians for the Banjul boys, expressed disappointment with the result, noting that it was lack of concentration which cost the game.
The Brikama United boss, Sulayman Kuyateh told the press that the win was a good start for them after losing in the super cup to GPA.
