Gambian beach volleyball superstar Babucarr Jarra fondly called Mbye’, has won himself the best attacker award in the just concluded Senegalese volleyball league.
Jarra who represented The Gambia at the continental cup beach volleyball finals this May in Tunisia and at the 2015 All African Games in Brazzaville also won the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award.
Babucarr attained this achievement after helping his current team Gaston Berger University to beat Sheik Anta Diop University in the Senegalese league final on Sunday in Dakar by 3 straight sets (25-20, 25-20, 25-17). The 18-year-old Gambian international, Jarra played for Gaston Berger in the 2016 Senegalese National Volleyball league after starting his volleyball career with Old Jeshwang Volleyball team, where he won 4 national league titles and one beach volleyball title.
“Alhamdulillah, I thank God, my family, friends and all loved ones for supporting me to get to this greatest moment of my life. And please help me to celebrate this award with my team mates, coach Sadibou Lo and the entire Gaston Berger University,” Jarra wrote on his Facebook timeline.
Speaking to Gambia Volleyball Federation, Jarra said Senegalese players are no better than the Gambian players, but are supported and more encouraged to grow and perform well.
“If The Gambia’s private sector, institutional donors and individuals could come forward and patronise the country’s volleyball federation in its quest to promote and develop the discipline, they would really encourage Gambian volleyball players to do well,” the lad concludes.
